Of all our birds, Kanati trusted me the most.
I think he might have actually liked me.
I was the first one to present him to the public,
and the last person to hold him alive.
He was my friend for eleven years.

If will power alone had been enough, Kanati would have been soaring high and raising many successful families throughout a long life. That tiny bird – our beloved “naughty Kanati” – had more gumption than the most audacious come-from-behind sports team. He taught everyone who met him never to give up, and we’ll cherish his memory as we face our own challenges.

Though I was initially drawn to EITS because of Ivan, Kanati soon became very special to me. I loved his unique talent for getting tangled in his jesses as he’d turn in circles and launch himself off the glove. Whether he enjoyed the thrill of it or thought maybe he could fly if he just tried one more time, who knows. But afterwards he always looked proud as he bobbed his (often kinda sad) tail feathers.
This spunkiness made me see him as a perennially young bird. Realizing recently how old he was actually becoming, I worried about seeing him slowly decline at some point. So, though I’ll miss him incredibly, I’m glad he stayed youthful and energetic ‘til the end…he deserved nothing less, and that’s how I’ll remember him.
