Field Trip: Ventura Duck Ponds / Wetlands

The Ventura County Game Preserve is adjacent to Point Mugu NAS and close to the ocean in Oxnard.This 300 acre duck pond array offers a wide variety of habitats for us to explore. We will bird on foot for approximately 3 miles on flat walkable roads and must remain as a group.

Target Birds:

  • Ducks
  • Waders, including White-faced Ibis
  • Shorebired
  • Raptors
  • Songbirds

Directions:

  • Take Hwy 101 to the Rice Avenue off ramp (in Oxnard)
  • Turn right on Rice Avenue and head towards the ocean
  • Take the Hueneme Road turnoff when Rice Avenue turns to Hwy 1
  • Head West on Hueneme Road
  • Turn left on Casper Road
  • Turn left at the end of Casper Road into the private area, 2950 Casper Road
  • Please Park on the paved road near the drainage ditch at the ranch buildings

  • Santa Barbara/Goleta Coast Audubon Members Only
  • Bring water, snack or lunch
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • We will be walking about 3 miles in exposed area
  • Dress in layers
  • Bring a hat
  • Binoculars a must, spotting scopes are very useful
