Dan Robinette, a Point Blue scientist, will be giving an illustrated presentation on shorebirds which depend on California coastal habitats!
July 3, 2026 will mark the 10th annual World Seabird Day. July 3, 1844 was the last known sighting of the Great Auk before it went extinct and scientists chose this date to raise awareness of the continuing conservation threats to seabird populations throughout the world. During this presentation, coastal program biologist Dan Robinette will introduce the many seabird species that are dependent on California’s coastal and nearshore habitats, discuss the threats they face, and highlight some of the conservation victories giving these birds hope. He will present on current scientific studies and conservation efforts and discuss participatory science opportunities for coastal communities.
Dan Robinette is the Coastal Program Leader for Point Blue Conservation Science (www.pointblue.org). He currently leads research and monitoring programs along the California coast with much of his work focused on developing marine birds as indicators of ecosystem condition. His research projects include investigating the impacts of human disturbance, climate change, and habitat restoration on coastal breeding birds. Robinette currently serves on the California Least Tern Management Science Advisory Group, the Elegant Tern Task Force, the Montezuma Wetland Restoration Project Technical Review Team, and the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.
