Field Trip: S.B. Harbor & Andree Clark Bird Refuge

Santa Barbara Harbor is a busy place during the day, but one can find many species of shorebirds, gulls, terns and water birds which take advantage of the quiet hours of the early morning. The Andre Clark Bird Refuge is a fresh water feature which hosts many water birds and shore birds.

Directions:

From Hwy 101 north-bound 

  • Exit Hwy 101 at Castillo Street, Exit 97
  • Turn right on to Castillo Street
  • Turn right on to Shoreline drive
  • Turn left at Harbor Way
  • Free parking is on the right or straight ahead

From Hwy 101 south-bound

  • Exit Hwy 101 at the Garden Street / Laguna Street, Exit 96B
  • Bear left to exit onto Garden Street
  • Turn left at the light onto Garden Street
  • Turn right onto Cabrillo Blvd
  • Follow Cabrillo Blvd which turns into Shoreline Drive
  • Turn left at Harbor Way
  • Free parking is on the right or straight ahead

  • Meet at the base of the breakwater at the Santa Barbara Harbor (adjacent to the Santa Barbara Yacht Club).
  • Ample, free parking is on the right as you enter the harbor across from La Playa Stadium off Shoreline Drive.
  • We will look for birds in the marina, offshore, and along the sand-spit between the harbor and Stern’s Wharf. 
  • After birding the Harbor, we will drive to the Andree Clark bird refuge to explore this freshwater ecosystem.
  • Many migrant and resident sea birds and water birds are expected.

  • Bring water, snack
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Bring a hat
  • Binoculars a must, spotting scopes are useful

Trip Coordinator:

We will do everything we can for a safe experience, but COVID is always a risk. Additionally, SBAS may decide to cancel events should pandemic conditions warrant it. For these reasons, we ask that:

-All attendees be vaccinated, each participant bring a mask to the event, and social distancing be practiced to the greatest extent practicable.
-Masks be worn in car pool situations.
-Prior to attending any bird walk or field trip, please come back to this site for directions and event updates.
